North London Line

Case Study Image

In conjunction with the works leading up to the 2012 Olympic Games, the North London Line from Willesden High Level to Stratford via Gospel Oak, is being upgraded with enhancements to the Signalling, Permanent Way, and Civil Engineering and Telecommunications systems. As part of these works a large section of the third rail system was recovered, this was the result of an isolating section at Primrose Hill junction. The old traction power arrangement between Wembley Mainline SCC and Camden Road Junction SB employed dual electrification. This comprised of 25KV AC overhead line electrification and 750V DC third rail electrification.

As part of the works implemented at Stage 1 & 2, a large area of the third rail system was recovered. As a result of the recovery of the third rail traction supply East of Primrose Hill junction an Isolating Section (to provide protection against stray DC current) was provided using LCS switchgear products. The project comprised of Ten Spark Gap Resistor Assemblies, Four 2 Pole Contactor & Manual Isolator panels and Two Return Current Isolators.
